*A week and more of uneasy nightmare-ridden sleep is not completely erased by a single night, but it can do a fair amount when the power of Morpheus is behind it. Will wakes only reluctantly to a shrieking alarm clock, but when he rises he feels more alert than he has in days.*

*When he looks at himself in the mirror, his face is still a little drawn but the dark circles are nearly gone, and he trots down the stairs to breakfast with a light heart, because Morpheus his friend is back and the long nightmare is over.*

James peers at Will over breakfast with a certain degree of surprise - but between Mary's chatter, and Mrs. Stanton's constant reminders about homework, there is no chance for either to get a word in edgewise until they are standing outside by the bus stop.

--Oh, lord, did I forget my--

*Will digs in his bag for a minute, and then finds his English homework.*

Here it is. All right.

James looks at him, his brow furrowed.

"Well - you actually look awake this morning, and not terrified witless. Which is a good thing, I suppose."

*Will does not roll his eyes at the phrase "terrified witless," but he looks like he's thinking about it. He smiles crookedly.*

Yes. It's a good thing.

*simply* It's over.

"It? You mean, everything that was wrong is -"

James hears the sound of the bus coming down the road, and sighs.

"I suppose you'll clam up as soon as we get on the public transportation, won't you."

*cheerfully* Probably.

I mean the nightmares, all of that. Nyarlathotep.

*And then the bus pulls to a halt, and the doors open.*

James looks at him, and rolls his eyes, but grins - a real, relieved grin - and then shoulders his bag and climbs into the bus.

*Paul loves the pillow. The pillow loves Paul.*

*They cuddle silently in the darkness -- the semi-darkness -- the unpleasant brightness of 2 pm.*

Alas! For the love of Paul and the pillow is Not to Be. They are to be cruelly separated - at least the pleasant darkness of 2 AM comes again.

The agent of that separation? James Stanton, pulling Will by the wrist behind him, and announcing loudly, "We are going to have a Talk."

*very sleepily* 's all right, really, know how to use a condom.

*Will stares, and tries not to crack up. A rather muffled snort of laughter is the result.*

*He tries again, half-heartedly, to tug his wrist out of James's grasp, mostly on the principle of the thing.*

"This," says James soberly, "is very good news, I'm sure, and we all rejoice. But not what we came to talk about, unfortunately."

*Paul pulls the pillow over his head.*

*muffled:* What, then?

From: [identity profile] sign-seeker.livejournal.com
*Will manages to free his wrist, and perches on the edge of the bed. Not on Paul's legs, because he is a nice younger brother.*

Nyarlathotep's gone.

*Simple and matter of fact, but there's a smile lurking somewhere in his voice.*

*Paul's head reappears, and he fumbles for his glasses.* You're saying the trouble's over?

"He actually slept last night," James informs Paul. "With actual sleeping."

mm.

*A crooked smile, agreeing.*

That's good.

*He rolls over and appears to go back to sleep.*

James fixes this by the simple expedient of poking him.

"We're not done."

*Will, who is perfectly happy to let them be done, raises an amused eyebrow at James, but does not protest.*

From: [identity profile] barsoflight.livejournal.com
*mournfully* Oh.

*He rolls back over, and sits up, adjusting the abused glasses, and blinking.* Right. Will, would you like to explain?

*Will pulls his legs up to sit tailor-style on the bed, now that Paul's legs aren't in the way.*

Well. I told you that he was an aspect of Dream, I think? Not just a new-come person like any other arrival.

From: [identity profile] sixth-son.livejournal.com
"You didn't tell me that," James grumbles.

*Paul rubs his face, and says, more alert:* I don't remember that, either.

*Will frowns a little.*

Thought I did. Sorry.

Anyway, yes. Morpheus who is Dream -- dream personified, you see, all dreams -- has been there for a long time. And then nine days ago, I think it was, that other aspect was brought out.

And now he has been pushed back, and locked away deep inside Morpheus.

"That's all well and good," James says firmly, "and no more nightmares is very good.

But that's not all there is to talk about."

From: [identity profile] sign-seeker.livejournal.com
*Will eyes him, eyebrows rising in question.*

From: [identity profile] sixth-son.livejournal.com
James begins to pace again.

One, two, three, turn.

"Paul and I were talking," he explains eventually, "yesterday. About you, and your magic bar, and so on."

Date: 2005-02-10 05:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sign-seeker.livejournal.com
*The eyebrows go up further, a "Go on" gesture. Will's face is calm and untroubled.*

Date: 2005-02-10 05:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sixth-son.livejournal.com
James comes out with it, finally.

"What if," he demands, "you hadn't come back?"

Date: 2005-02-10 06:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] barsoflight.livejournal.com
That doesn't exactly answer the question.

From: [identity profile] sign-seeker.livejournal.com
*Will looks at him and exhales.*

*quietly*
It's true, though.

"How," James demands, "do you know?"

Date: 2005-02-10 06:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sign-seeker.livejournal.com
*mildly* For one thing, Death doesn't work there.

And for another, *he shrugs* I would.

*It's a statement of fact, and all the assurance he can offer.*

*stares*

"Death doesn't work there"?

From: [identity profile] sign-seeker.livejournal.com
mm.

*He looks at them, calmly.*

Magic bar, remember? The rules there are... not exactly like the ordinary world.

From: [identity profile] sixth-son.livejournal.com
"Death working or not," James intervenes, "any number of things could happen to you, Will, don't say they couldn't.

And what are we supposed to tell Mum and Dad, that day when you're - I don't know, trapped in a landslide or eloping with a magical midget or something, and don't come back?"

Date: 2005-02-10 07:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] barsoflight.livejournal.com
*sighs* I would have liked to have known that before. But James is right.

Date: 2005-02-10 07:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sign-seeker.livejournal.com
Sorry.

*It's sincere. Then he sighs, and pulls his knees up to his chest, scooting back a bit to lean against Paul's footboard.*

I won't. I mean, I'll come back, honestly. I'll be fine.

I don't know what else to tell you.

You don't mind us coming with you now, do you?

"How," James repeats bleakly, "can you be sure?"

Date: 2005-02-10 07:31 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sign-seeker.livejournal.com
*to Paul* No. If you like.
